Bonfire Night...or Bonfire Fortnight as it now seems to have become…is thankfully over. As the last rocket screams into the distance, and the trembling dogs finally venture out from behind the sofas, our thoughts inevitably turn to the next and biggest seasonal event of the year. I am of course talking about Monkey Day.
As I'm sure you know Monkey Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated internationally on December 14th. While the holiday is mainly about monkeys it does celebrate other non-human primates such as apes, tarsiers and lemurs. Quite right too.
It's hard to compete with the huge sense of wonder and joyous celebration that surrounds Monkey Day, but the ancient Christian festival known as Christmas makes a good fist of it.
Eye Like pondered long and hard as to whether to base our next event around Monkey Day or Christmas, but after much prevarication we felt that on balance Christmas probably deserved a bit of a boost, a bit of arty support from the Eye Like crew. And so it has come to pass that on December 5th at 7pm we will be having our first Eye Like Xmas event, alongside our dear friends at Benedicts.
Having made that seminal decision we threw away our monkey nuts hand painted with the faces of dead historical figures, and tied up our spotty handkerchiefs on the end of a stick and headed for the city with streets paved with gold leaf. Our goal (other than to become the first married Mayor and Mayoress of London), was to find the choicest, most succulent items to regale Eye Like Xmas!
And boy have we worked magic, without even a handful of beans or our kindly Fairy Godmother needing to make an appearance.
So let's begin with everyone's favourite Icelandic artist Kristjana S Williams, who has recently produced a limited range of the most gorgeous silk cushions. We're lucky enough to have got our grubby victorian mitts on a selection of these beauties just in time for Dec 5th!
We now have six featured artists signed up and on board the Eye Like train. The latest stars joining Kristjana, Maria Rivans, Russell Marshall and Delphine Lebourgeois are Bonnie and Clyde and Anna Marrow. Bonnie and Clyde is another Brighton based artist who specialises in collage, type, paint, illustration and photography to produce visually arresting prints and mixed media originals. We're proud to have her as part of the growing Eye Like family and we'll have several pieces of her work on show at the Xmas event.
Joining Bonnie and Clyde is Bristol based illustrator Anna Marrow. Her hand-printed screen prints, finished with touches of glitter and freehand drawing, are simply delightful and would make the perfect present for your favourite monkey or even human. As well as a number of her choicest prints Anna is also working on an original piece of art for us that we'll be selling on the 5th. Who needs John Lewis when you have Eye Like?
Eye Like's dear friend Charlie, better known as "Pure Evil', has joined forces, would you believe, with Royal Doulton to help create their Street Art range. We have grabbed ourselves a few sets of his plates and mugs, which are a must for those annoying folk who have everything. Who could argue with a nice bit of china?
So that's just a taste of some of the festive fare that we'll be serving up alongside the curry on Dec 5th. And for those of you who attended our inaugural event at Benedicts you are probably wondering how on earth we will fit all of this into our favourite coffee serving establishment? Well we have a cunning plan. Parked outside will be one of these...
Yes we will have what we believe to be the first ever mobile art gallery installed inside a removal van. Eye Like are breaking down barriers once again in pursuit of art and happiness. We would like to thank Chris Bell at GB Liners who has kindly donated the van for the day to help us raise money for the Beaconsfield based charity Greenfingers, who build magical gardens at children's hospices.
So there you have it, Eye Like Xmas at Benedicts on December 5th. Or for the more traditional amongst you we're also happy if you prefer Eye Like Monkeys. Either way come along to eat, drink and buy something unique. You know it makes sense :-)
